Let me refine what I said previously. It is not, primarily, our strengths that make us human, that colour and give character to our lives, but our weaknesses, contradictions and idiosyncrasies. Perfection is nice and boring, something we could leave to machines. Imperfection is much more human.
When we celebrate great human achievements--be it the first human landing on the moon, Liu Xiang's record-breaking 110m hurdles timing, or a perfectly-mixed cocktail, we are celebrating not so much strength in itself, as the overcoming of weakness, the struggle towards perfection.
